What Can I Do To Improve My Home’s Curb Appeal?

What Can I Do To Improve My Home’s Curb Appeal?

cedar siding

When you put your home on the market, you want to be sure that the exterior is as appealing as possible. This isn’t just because a good-looking house is memorable to potential homebuyers. It’s also because an attractive house can make or break a sale.

So what can you do to make your curb appeal stand out to potential buyers and guests? We put together some of the most common improvements homeowners invest in when putting their house on the market to boost their curb appeal.

Siding replacements

The three most popular types of siding materials include cedar, vinyl, and fiber cement. If you haven’t replaced your home’s siding in over 25 years, it may be a good idea to have new siding installed.

Cedar siding is a good choice if you’re looking to boost your home’s curb appeal. Not only is cedar siding long-lasting, but it also gives a face-lift to the houses it’s installed on. Many homeowners who choose vinyl siding end up switching over to cedar siding once it’s time for a replacement.

Landscaping updates

Landscaping for your home is like bangs for your hair. It’s what helps to frame the face of your house. If your home’s front lawn is looking a little plain, consider investing in some landscaping designs.

You don’t need to get too fancy. Some bushes and flowers may be all you need to make your home a happier looking place.

Driveway paving

Although your the exterior of your house is important when it comes to curb appeal, the appearance of the curb itself is also important. A driveway that’s bumpy, uneven, or has holes will need to be paved either by you or the next homeowners.

Potential homebuyers may not be willing to have their driveway paved as soon as they move in. It may be a good idea to have your driveway looking its best before you put it on the market.

Looking for a siding replacement?

There are up to 15 different types of siding and cedar siding is the number one most popular type of wood siding. If you’re looking for a new siding installation to boost your home’s curb appeal, cedar siding is a great choice.

Be On The Lookout For These Common Winter Siding Problems

siding problems and maintenance

Are you experiencing siding problems on your Seattle area home? The majority of siding is capable of withstanding winds of up to 110 mph, but winter is a beast no homeowner can hope to tame. You can only prepare your house to the best of your ability and make the necessary repairs when you find any damage.

The good news is that winter causes many of the same types of problems for homeowners every year, so we know what kinds of problems you can expect this season. Here are some of the most common winter siding problems to give you a leg up on seasonal maintenance.

Warping in the wood

Cedar siding can easily withstand the elements like rain and snow. But if moisture happens to get beneath the siding it can seep into the wood and into your insulation.

This can cause your cedar siding to become warped from the moisture or even mold over time. If the problem is limited only to one area, you may be able to repair or replace the siding and your insulation.

Holes and cracks

Your siding is capable of withstanding strong winds, but debris is another story. Winter weather can bring hail and strong winds, which can pull branches from vulnerable trees.

This debris can smack into your siding, which can leave holes and cracks. Be sure to check for these damages after a storm (even a small one). You don’t want to let the problem become a major disaster later on.

Water penetration and moisture buildup can cause siding problems

Mentioned above in relation to warping, moisture buildup in your siding can be a sign of another common winter issue: clogged gutters. Leaves and debris from the fall can block your gutters, which keeps water from successfully running off from your roof.

Left on your roof, the water can seep into your shingles, insulation, and your siding. This can cause problems for your home’s foundation and can even form a dangerous ice dam. If you think you may have a blockage in your gutters, be sure to clear it out as soon as possible.

In need of a cedar siding installation?

Cedar siding is one of the most popular types of siding, and for good reason. With the proper maintenance, it can last for up to 25 years.

If you’re in need of a cedar siding repair this winter, or if you’re looking for a siding replacement, Side Pro has the professional siding contractors you need to get the job done. To learn more about our repair siding, contact Side Pro today.

What Can I Do If I Don’t Like My New Home’s Siding?

new sidingIt can be a little overwhelming moving into your very first house. Once you’ve signed the mortgage and moved in, all responsibility for it is officially yours. That includes major housing components like the plumbing, roof, and siding.

Depending on the type of siding you have, you won’t have to worry about caring for your new home’s siding for a while. With proper maintenance, cedar siding can last for up to 25 years.

But, if your new home doesn’t have new siding, when is the best time to replace it? Is it a good idea to replace it when you move in?

When do I replace the siding on my new home?

If you’re unsure of when your home’s siding was installed, keep an eye on the quality throughout the year. The majority of siding installations can handle winds that are as high as 110 mph, but you can never be too sure.

Contact a siding contractor if you notice damage to your siding. Debris or age could have caused cracks or other damage that needs to be repaired to keep cold air and wetness out.

You may need to contact a siding company like Side Pro about new siding if your new home’s siding has been damaged beyond repair. This is why it’s a good idea to have a home inspection before officially buying a home.

What if I don’t like my new home’s siding?

It happens. You move into a new home that has the right layout, the right number of bedrooms, and just enough space, but the curb appeal leaves something to be desired.

The good news is you don’t necessarily need to wait for your home’s siding to need repairs and replacement before you decide to get rid of it. Many homeowners often choose to replace their vinyl siding with cedar siding because they prefer the style and durability.

Does your house need new siding?

It’s recommended to repaint your cedar siding every 10 to 15 years and to re-stain it every five to 10 years depending on your style choice. But, eventually, your siding will need to be repaired or replaced.

Fortunately, Side Pro offers siding repair and siding replacement when your home needs it. To learn more about installing new siding or to speak to a siding contractor, contact Side Pro today.

What Is Hardie Siding?

hardie siding

Home exterior siding options come in surprising variety. Cedar siding and vinyl siding are two of the most popular siding materials homeowners choose to protect their outer walls, but other options abound. Specifically, fiber cement siding, the third most popular type, is the lesser-known alternative to vinyl and cedar. Also known as Hardie siding, this type might be the perfect choice for your home’s exterior.

What Is Hardie Siding?

Hardie siding, or Hardie board, is a unique siding material made with layered cement fibers. The cement mixture includes sand, cellulose wood fibers, and water to create a product that resiliently withstands the elements. Its name, however, does not come from the product’s toughness, but instead comes from its inventor, James Hardie.

What are the Benefits of Cement Board Siding?

Though Hardie siding comes in and out of style, and is more common in some regions, this type of siding has several enduring benefits, including:

1. Durability

Hardie board siding is completely rot- and insect-resistant — after all, termites aren’t interested in eating sand and cement! Plus, Hardie board is incredibly resistant to rain, wind, snow, hail, and other common weather events. High humidity won’t warp this type of siding, and the cement is even fire resistant. Choosing Hardie siding is choosing an exterior that won’t need to be replaced for several decades, and will only require minimal repairs.

2. Attractive Appearance

This type of siding is designed to mimic the appearance of other, “traditional” siding types, like wood. As such, Hardie board is known for boosting a home’s curb appeal. Since it comes in a variety of colors, homeowners can choose based on their taste preferences and what might look best with their home’s unique architecture. Hardie board can even be bought in shingle-style pieces or vertical panels, which provides homeowners with even greater choice and control over their home’s final appearance.

3. Warranty

James Hardie knew his innovative design is built to last, so nearly all genuine Hardie siding options come with a 30 or even 50-year warranty.

Hardie siding may not be as well known as vinyl siding, or as “traditional” as wood siding, but the innovative technology of Hardie board makes it a great choice for many homes nonetheless. If you’d like to learn more about the quality and beauty Hardie board can offer, contact Side-Pro Inc. today!

Need New Siding? Avoid These Exterior Siding Mistakes

repair siding

Winter is right around the corner, but luckily your siding is able to handle the elements no matter the weather. In fact, the average siding installation is capable of handling winds of up to 110 mph.

Unfortunately, flying debris and age can also impact your home’s exterior siding. That said, if you find yourself in need of a new siding repair or installation before winter hits, be sure not to make some of the following mistakes.

Prioritizing cost over quality

There are up to 15 different types of siding and the top three most popular kinds include cedar, vinyl, and fiber cement. Many homeowners often choose to install vinyl siding because it’s the cheapest option and they’re looking to save money on their house.

But too often homeowners realize that there’s a reason why vinyl siding is the cheapest option. It doesn’t have the quality that other types of siding, like cedar siding, has.

Cedar siding may require a little more maintenance every three to seven years, but its durability makes it worth the elbow-grease.

Attempting to install your siding yourself

In a perfect world, you might be able to install your home’s exterior siding on your own and you wouldn’t make any mistakes. But in the world we live in, it’s never a good idea to DIY your siding.

If given the choice to have your siding installed by amateur installers or professional installers, odds are you would give the job to the professional siding contractor. So why attempt to do your siding yourself if you wouldn’t trust an amateur installer?

DIY siding installation can impact your siding’s performance, cause condensation buildup in your insulation, and damage your home’s structural integrity. There’s also the risk of you getting injured while on the job.

By hiring a professional installer, you don’t have to worry about your siding’s performance. You can expect it to work just like its supposed to, no condensation involved.

Need a professional to repair siding?

It’s recommended to apply a new coat of stain, sealer, or paint every three to seven years to maintain your cedar siding. But, sometimes your siding can suffer from damage that needs to be repaired or replaced.

Side Pro offers siding installation and repair siding to have your house looking like new again. To learn more about our siding repairs and siding replacements, contact Side Pro today.

4 Signs It’s Time To Replace Your Siding

installing new siding

Cedar siding is the number one most popular type of wood siding. Unfortunately, all siding will need to be replaced eventually once it succumbs to nature’s various weather conditions.

With proper maintenance, cedar siding is expected to last your home up to 25 years. But how do you know when it’s time for installing new siding? Here are the most common signs it’s time to replace your siding.

  1. Dry rot. Rot eats away at the body of your siding, which is why it’s so important to catch it early on to get rid of it. Unfortunately, once rot has run rampant through your siding, you’ll need to replace it because your siding won’t be able to perform its role of keeping your family comfortable and safe.

  2. High heating and cooling bills. There are many different reasons for why your heating and cooling bills may be higher than usual. One potential reason is that your siding needs to be replaced. Siding that’s too old or has been damaged may underperform and let hot or cool air out of your house.

  3. Loose or cracked siding. Loose or cracked siding isn’t often a major problem. You might only need part of your siding replaced in this case rather than installing new siding on the entire house. However, you might need entirely new siding if a larger area is cracked or loose. Talk to a siding contractor to get an idea of what may be best for your home.

  4. You have loose wallpaper or peeling paint. If the wallpaper inside your house looks loose or if your paint is starting to peel, it could be a sign your siding needs to be replaced. This is because when your siding is faulty it can allow moisture to get in underneath the outer layer and wreak havoc your home’s wallboard, wallpaper, and paint.

Need expert contractors for installing new siding?

Cedar siding needs to be re-stained every five to 10 years and repainted every 10 to 15 years, but once your siding starts to go you may be looking at a siding replacement.

The siding contractors at Side Pro provide siding replacements and installations so your home always looks its best. To learn more about installing new siding and siding repair, contact Side Pro today.

Cedar Vs. Vinyl Siding: Which Option Is Best For Your House?

new siding

There are up to 15 different types of siding, but the two most popular types of siding materials are cedar siding and vinyl siding. Cedar siding is often chosen for its beautiful color and aesthetic whereas vinyl siding is chosen for its price.

If you’re in need of a siding replacement or siding installation, you may be unsure whether or not to choose cedar or vinyl siding for your home. So which type of siding is the better option?

Cedar Vs. Vinyl: Which New Siding Is Right For You?

New homeowners may choose to use vinyl siding because it’s the cheapest siding option. Vinyl siding is also low maintenance compared to other types of siding while still being able to withstand winds as high as 110 mph.

Yet, once their siding needs to be replaced, homeowners often turn to cedar siding for their siding replacement material instead of replacing the vinyl. Why is that?

As it turns out, vinyl siding is the cheaper siding option for a reason. Once installed, vinyl siding doesn’t have the quality appearance or craftsmanship that cedar siding offers.

Over time, vinyl siding has a habit of cracking, fading, and buckling. Unfortunately, once this happens you’ll need to completely replace your siding rather than repair it like you would with cedar siding.

But what sets cedar siding apart from the other types of siding? And what makes it the number one choice among wood siding options?

What Makes Cedar Siding A Household Favorite?

It’s true that cedar siding requires maintenance, but it’s maintenance worth doing for the aesthetic and quality that cedar siding offers. What’s more, with proper maintenance, your cedar siding can last as long as 25 years.

But cedar siding isn’t a favorite among homeowners because of its maintenance. It’s a favorite because of its classic appearance, natural insulation, and its ability to act as a sound barrier to the outside.

Additionally, when your cedar siding has been damaged you can contact a siding contractor to repair the damage rather than investing in all new siding.

Does Your Home Need New Siding?

Even the best siding doesn’t last forever. Like a roof, your siding will need to be repaired or replaced over the years due to age and weather damage.

Side Pro provides cedar siding to those who are looking for siding repair or new siding. To learn more about our siding installation process, contact a siding contractor at Side Pro today.

What Are The Benefits Of Cedar Wood Siding?

siding installation

Cedar wood siding is an incredibly popular siding choice among homeowners because of its beautiful color and eco-friendly material. But cedar siding doesn’t come without its necessary maintenance.

That said, what are the benefits of using cedar siding for your home and how can you properly manage the few trouble areas that come along with those benefits?

What are the advantages of cedar siding?

There are many benefits to using cedar wood siding for your home. The most common benefit that many homeowners opting for cedar know of is the wood’s warm aesthetic.

Cedar siding has a warm color and the smell of the wood creates a naturally homey sensation for many homeowners. Additionally, the different wood grains and siding styles give you the ability to customize the look of your home even if you’re using a popular wood choice.

Other benefits include the cedar’s ability to hold onto its wood staining should you choose to stain it, resist swelling and cracking, and durability. Cedar siding is also relatively easy to install.

Finally, cedar siding is biodegradable, renewable, and reclaimable, making it a major eco-friendly option for those who love to do their part for the environment.

What are the disadvantages of cedar siding (and how can I conquer them)?

Because cedar siding is made from natural wood, it will need proper maintenance to stay in good condition, not unlike a wooden deck. Fortunately, your cedar siding isn’t a garden so you don’t have to perform maintenance every day.

It’s recommended to re-stain your cedar siding every five to 10 years if the siding is stained. If painted, it’s recommended to repaint the siding every 10 to 15 years.

This helps to protect your cedar siding from moisture penetration, mold, and warping that could impact the overall look of your siding.

Looking for a siding installation company for your home?

If you’re interested in cedar wood siding installation, you’re not alone. Cedar siding is the number one most popular type of wood siding and it can last up to 25 years with proper maintenance.

Whether you’re looking for a siding installer to give your home the cedar siding you love or you need to repair siding, the siding services of Side Pro have you covered. To learn more about our siding installation process or to schedule your siding installation, contact Side Pro today.

Side-Pro fixed an issue with some wavy sideboards on my home. The team that came out was fast, effective, professional -- and genuinely nice guys. They explained what they were doing, answered all my questions, and got the work done beautifully and ahead of schedule. Afterwards they followed up promptly to make sure I was satisfied and to let me know they were available for any future questions or concerns. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone needing similar work done.

Side Pro was a pleasure to work with from the start. I learned in the bid process that most siding and window companies are sales teams only and all the installation is sub-contracted out. It was important to me to use a firm that was accountable for the end to end job and Side Pro used full-time employees for my job. The sales person knew a lot about siding and gave me some great recommendations. He submitted a competitive price and then walked through the full job with me and the job foreman. Then the job foreman took over and was very responsive to all my questions and change orders over the course of project. The installation team was also excellent. They cleaned up every day and did really top notch work. I am very particular and they worked to understand what I was after and made it happen. Great job. The job site had COVID procedures posted, which were followed by the crew, and a safety officer dropped by on two occasions to check up on things. I honestly couldn't have asked for a better customer experience and recommend Side Pro to anyone considering new siding.

Side-Pro, what a class act! My husband and I discovered the company at the SEA Home show in Feb 2020. They had serval booths in the show and all representatives were friendly and knowledgeable. They shared information and answered questions, never did we feel pressured, plus they had a great magnet clip give away 😊. After the show, I called the Side-Pro office to ask few questions. I was fortunate and was referred to Russ De Arment, the sales manager. Russ was able to answer my questions over the phone to my satisfaction and was even able to come out the same day to do a walk through and give an estimate. Russ truly presents himself as a contracting professional. He is honest and presents facts, not what you might want to hear to get your business. I had a siding question on my son’s new construction house and Russ even went to his house to look for me and wrote up a suggest list of repairs for my son. He did this kind gesture without being compensated. The installers were fantastic and treated my house like it was their own. They were respectful on my property and left it in better shape than when they arrived, this was especially important to the field supervisor Duane. As with any project, there are always follow up items. I found one small item and within a day of me notifying Russ, he sent Duane, another amazing team member, who not only took care of the punch list item, he even fixed something for me that wasn’t even siding related! Finally, the painting supervisor, Mo, this is sounding redundant, but another amazing Side-Pro team member. Once again, knowledgeable, reliable, and fun to work with. In SEA, rain is an outdoor painter’s worst enemy. Mo did a great job of communicating schedule changes immediately and always responded to my emails quickly. Like the siders, the painters were professional and did a great job. I have had my house painted three times in 20 years, and by far, this two-man crew was quick, efficient and did quality work. I have a 4500, three story house and they completed the work in less than 4 days. In summary, I got three bids, Side-Pro was the least expensive by a few hundred, but that is not why I went with them. It was their professionalism and responsiveness that helped make my decision to use them and I am so happy I did!
