Cedar Siding Replacement & Installation
Western Red Cedar siding in Clear and Knotty grades, installed by in-house carpenters throughout greater Seattle and the Puget Sound. Cedar replacement and custom woodwork since 1995.

Western Red Cedar
The Cedar We Install
Bevel Western Red Cedar across the full range of grades, chosen for the house and the budget:
- A Clear and B Clear — the premium grades: tight, vertical-grain faces with minimal character marks, for homes where the siding is the finish.
- Clear V.G. Heart — vertical-grain heartwood, the most dimensionally stable and naturally durable cut.
- Rustic and Quality Knotty / Select Knotty — sound tight-knot grades that bring character at a friendlier price, right for cabins, gables, and homes wearing the wood proudly.
Grade selection is half the project. We’ll show you samples and be straight about what each grade looks like after five Northwest winters, not just on day one.

Additional Information About Cedar Siding
Cedar Restoration on Older Homes
Much of pre-1930 Seattle, Tacoma, and Everett was sided in old-growth cedar, and a surprising amount of it is worth saving. Restoration starts with a board-by-board assessment: what’s sound stays, what’s failed gets replaced in matched profile and grade, and the trim gets the same treatment. Our carpenters mill and match profiles that haven’t been stocked in decades. When a house is past saving in wood — or the owner is done with wood’s maintenance — several Hardie profiles carry the same shadow lines, and we’ll show you that comparison honestly.
Living With Cedar
Cedar rewards owners who maintain it and punishes owners who don’t, so we’d rather you know the deal upfront. It wants a sound finish maintained on schedule, correct clearances from grade and roofing, and attention to the shaded walls that dry slowly in the wet Seattle-Tacoma climate. Two problems come up often enough that we’ve written guides on them: tannin staining — the dark bleed-through at fasteners and finish failures — and seasonal inspection, especially on shade walls. Installed and maintained right, cedar outlasts its owners.
Budget Considerations
What Affects the Cost?
Grade drives cedar pricing more than any other material we install — Clear grades and Knotty grades are different budgets. Then profile and trim complexity (custom milling takes carpentry time), how much of the wall is restoration versus full replacement, finish choice, and the size and height of the house. We walk the house and give you a real number, free, with no pressure attached.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is cedar a good idea in the Seattle climate?
Yes, with a condition: it's naturally suited to Northwest weather — the region's original housing proves it — but it needs its finish and clearances maintained. If you want a no-maintenance wall, fiber cement is the honest recommendation instead.
Can you match the original siding on my old house?
Usually. Our carpenters mill and match historic bevel and drop profiles, and we document trim and reveals before any tear-off.
What's the difference between Clear and Knotty grades?
Appearance and price, mostly. Clear grades give a furniture-smooth face; Knotty grades show sound, tight knots and cost meaningfully less. Durability is more about the cut (vertical grain and heartwood lead) and the installation than the knots.
Why is my cedar staining dark around the nails?
Tannin bleed — cedar's natural extractives reacting with moisture and the wrong fasteners. Stainless fasteners and a sound finish prevent it; we cover the details in our tannin guide.
Cedar or vinyl?
Different leagues. Vinyl is cheaper upfront; cedar is repairable, beautiful, and suited to this climate in a way vinyl isn't. Our cedar-vs-vinyl guide walks through it honestly.
What warranty comes with the work?
Side-Pro's 5-Year Workmanship Warranty* on the installation, plus the finish manufacturer's coverage on the coating. *Restrictions and details apply.
