Why Composite for a Northwest Roof?
Modern architectural composite shingles are a long way from the flat three-tab roofs of decades past — dimensional profiles, algae-resistant granules (which matter here; the black streaking on Northwest roofs is algae), and wind ratings that hold when they’re fastened to the manufacturer’s schedule. Lifespans run decades, warranties are strong, and repairs are straightforward because the material is everywhere.
How We Install It
Tear-off to the deck and a full deck inspection — the only honest moment to find rot, and in this climate there’s often some. Then underlayment appropriate to the slope, ice-and-water protection at eaves and valleys, flashing at every penetration and wall transition, and shingles fastened to the manufacturer’s nailing schedule. Wind damage on Northwest roofs almost always traces back to fastening shortcuts, not the wind.
If siding is part of the project, we sequence the two so each protects the other — kick-out flashing and wall transitions are where roofs and siding meet, and where separate contractors point fingers. One company, one schedule, no finger-pointing.

Composite is not only a single-family product. Most of the pitched roofs on Puget Sound townhome rows, condominium buildings and low-rise commercial are the same architectural shingle.
- Pitched commercial and multi-family.Anything with slope takes composite. Flat and low-slope areas go to TPO and PVC or torch down, and many buildings need both on the same roof.

Composite Roofing Questions
How long does a composite roof last here?
Decades — the exact number depends on the shingle line, the installation, and the maintenance (mainly keeping moss and debris off). The installation is the variable you control most.
What about the black streaks I see on roofs everywhere?
Algae, feeding on moisture and granule fillers. Modern algae-resistant shingles largely prevent it.
Can you do the roof and siding together?
Yes, and it's often the smart sequence — the transitions between roof and wall are where leaks live, and one company detailing both sides of that joint is the fix.
What warranty comes with it?
The manufacturer's shingle warranty plus Side-Pro's 5-Year Workmanship Warranty on the installation.
How many layers can go on before a tear-off is required?
Washington allows a limited number of layers, but the more useful answer is that we tear off almost always — layering hides the deck, and the deck is exactly what needs inspecting. You cannot find rot through a second layer of shingles.
Do you handle gutters as part of the job?
Yes. Gutters, drip edge and the roof-to-wall transitions come off and go back as part of the scope. That junction is shared territory with your siding, which is why it is better done by one crew than two.
