If you’ve watched a north-facing wall turn green two summers after it was painted, you already know the problem Ceraclad is built to solve.

Ceraclad is fiber cement with a three-layer ceramic coating bonded to the face. Underneath, it behaves like any good fiber cement — dimensionally stable, non-combustible, and it won’t rot. The coating is what changes things. Its outer photocatalytic layer is super-hydrophilic: daylight breaks down the film of grime on the surface, and rain then slides underneath that film as a sheet and carries it away, instead of beading over the top of it.

That matters more here than in most places. Shaded, damp walls are normal from Seattle and Bellevue down through Tacoma, and they are exactly where standard painted fiber cement starts looking tired first — chalking, staining, and going green on the elevations that never get direct sun.

It is a premium product, and we will be straight with you about the cost against standard James Hardie board. Where it earns the difference is on the walls that never fully dry out.

Dirt washes off in the rain. The outer coating is photocatalytic and super-hydrophilic — daylight breaks down the film of grime, then rain slides underneath it and carries it away instead of beading over the top.
No repaint cycle. The ceramic layer does not chalk, fade, or go porous, so there is no five-to-seven-year repainting bill built into owning it.
Harder for growth to establish. A face that stays cleaner gives moss and algae less biofilm to colonize. Ceraclad’s own lab testing shows black mold failing to grow on the coating — they stop short of guaranteeing that on a real wall, and so do we.
20-year fade limited warranty. The manufacturer warrants the ceramic coating layer, not just the board underneath it.
Caulk-free joints. The T-joiner system removes the bead of sealant that normally cracks, discolors, and needs replacing every few years.
Non-combustible core. Fiber cement will not ignite or carry flame.
Panel and lap formats. Flat modern elevations in Bellevue and Seattle, or traditional horizontal courses on older Tacoma stock — the same coated surface either way.
Fiber cement underneath. Dimensionally stable, impact-resistant, and it will not rot or feed insects.

What makes Ceraclad's ceramic coating different from a standard painted fiber cement surface?

Standard painted fiber cement relies on a paint coating that can chalk, fade, and become porous over time, allowing moisture to penetrate and providing a surface that biological organisms can colonize. Ceraclad's ceramic coating is chemically bonded to the fiber cement substrate, sheds its surface film of dirt under photocatalytic action and rainfall, and does not chalk or become porous in the same way.

How does Ceraclad perform against Seattle's moss and algae growth?

Better than painted fiber cement, with an honest caveat. The photocatalytic coating is super-hydrophilic: daylight breaks down surface grime and rain then sheets underneath it and rinses it off, so the biofilm that moss and algae colonize has a much harder time building up. Ceraclad’s own lab testing shows black mold failing to grow on the coated surface, but the manufacturer explicitly says that does not prove moss and algae will not grow on a real building — and we are not going to claim otherwise. What we will say is that on shaded, north-facing walls it stays noticeably cleaner for longer than painted board. Nothing is maintenance-free in this climate.

Does Ceraclad cost more than standard fiber cement?

Yes. Expect to pay more than standard painted fiber cement, and we will put both numbers in front of you rather than only the one we would prefer you to look at. What closes the gap is the repainting you do not do: painted board on a shaded Seattle or Tacoma wall typically wants recoating every five to seven years, and across a 20–30 year hold that maintenance is real money. On a sunny, well-drained elevation the arithmetic is less compelling — and we will tell you that too.

Can Ceraclad be installed on an older home or is it only for new construction?

Both, and most of what we install goes onto existing homes — 1980s and 90s stock around Bellevue and Kirkland, older Craftsman and mid-century houses in Seattle and Tacoma. On a re-side we handle the whole sequence: stripping the old cladding, repairing the substrate, installing a new weather-resistive barrier, then the Ceraclad itself. The panel system does not mind whether the wall behind it is new or forty years old, provided it is flat, dry, and properly flashed.
