James Hardie siding in Redmond, installed over a ventilated rainscreen. Side-Pro rebuilt the exterior building envelope on this multi-family community — housewrap, flashing, rainscreen furring and cladding.

What matters here is what sits behind the siding. Treated wood furring holds the cladding off the wall to form a drained, vented cavity, screened top and bottom against insects. Water that gets past the cladding has somewhere to go and a path to dry — in this climate that is the difference between a wall that lasts and one that holds moisture against the structure.

Systems and Materials

James Hardie siding and trim. HardiePlank® lap siding, smooth HardiePanel® vertical siding, Rustic Hardie® trim, and Hardie® mounting blocks for lights, receptacles and utilities.

Ventilated rainscreen. Treated wood furring holds the cladding off the wall to form a drained and vented cavity, with aluminium vent screen at the openings for insect and debris protection.

Weather-resistive barrier. Typar® HouseWrap with matching seam tape, lapped and taped so the drainage plane runs continuously behind the rainscreen.

Window flashing. FortiFlash® self-adhered flashing at the openings, detailed into the housewrap rather than run over the top of it.

Architectural flashing. EasyTrim Reveals, custom-formed metal flashing, sloped Z-flashing at horizontal joints, panel corner flashing, and saddle flashing at the stem-wall transitions.

Ventilation. Soffit ventilation and hooded HVAC vents, with each penetration flashed and sealed back into the barrier.

Sealants. OSI® QUAD® exterior sealant at joints, penetrations and terminations.
