A self-adhered barrier has no fastener holes to seal and no seams to lap. What it does have is a substrate that must actually be dry.
Protecto Wall VP is a peel-and-stick weather-resistive barrier that bonds to the sheathing without primer and without mechanical fasteners. At 43.5 perms it is one of the more vapor-open membranes on the market, and unlike most WRBs it carries an ASTM E2357 assembly pass with an A1 classification — meaning it has been tested as an air barrier in a wall, not merely as a sheet on a bench.
The cold-weather figure is real: Protecto Wrap rates it for application down to -20°F. But the condition attached to it is what decides whether it works on a Puget Sound job in February. The substrate must be sound, clean, dry to the touch and free of frost. Air temperature is not the constraint here — a wet or frosted sheathing face is.
The other limit worth knowing is ultraviolet. The membrane is rated for 180 days of exposure, but the companion Form Flash 1 flashing is rated for 30. On a wall where the flashings go on first, that thirty-day clock is the one that runs out.

We used to say this product let us install reliably year-round through Seattle’s wet season. That was too strong. The adhesive tolerates cold; it does not tolerate a damp or frosted substrate, and neither does any other self-adhered membrane. On a genuinely wet winter week we will either tent and dry the wall or tell you to wait — and the manufacturer’s own instructions back that up. Worth knowing too: Protecto Wrap’s warranty runs ten years, materials only, prorated, with labor excluded.
